What is a Finger or Wrist Sling?
Finger Sling: a piece of cord tethering the forefinger to the thumb, around the back of the bow at the grip. Often used with recurve bows, the purpose is to keep the bow from pitching too far forward and hitting the ground after the shot. Recurve bows deliver forward motion and hand shock with a noticeable jump forward at the release of the bowstring
Wrist Sling: a piece of cord tethering the wrist around the back of the bow at the grip. Most often used with a compound bow. A wrist sling should be loose around the archer’s wrist. You don’t want it tight, it’s simply there for safety so if the bow gets out of your hand, it won’t fall to the ground.
Crossbows: Typically, there is no need for a finger or wrist sling with a mechanically drawn bow like the crossbow. These mechanically drawn bows have devices to hold the tension when the bow is fully drawn. They are not limited by the strength of a single archer and do not leap forward as you shoot like a recurve or compound bow will do.
